Team 1001 Review Drop and Classics Club Meme

Because of similar themes, I'm combining this last month's Classics Club meme with this month's review drop for Team 1001. Team 1001, please put links to reviews in the comments section.

December's Classics Club meme question was to describe our favorite memory of A Christmas Carol. I realized that although the story is so familiar to me, I couldn't remember ever watching a full-length adaptation of A Christmas Carol, nor had I read the book. My plan was to read the book (which I did, and reviewed here) as well as watch as many film adaptations as I could get my hands on. Unfortunately, there was a long waiting list at my library for most of these movies, so I only got to watch one - Disney's 2009 version with Jim Carrey.

I loved the animation in this movie. Scrooge's facial expressions were hilarious, and I adored Marley's ghost. The ghost of Christmas Past was pretty darned cute, too. The movie started out really well. The first half of it kept very true to  Dickens' novella. The second half took some artistic licenses, which I didn't really feel added to my enjoyment. Overall, I'd say this is a good rendition to watch, but I'm not going to hold my breath on it being the best. I still have many to see. Then I'll judge. :)

What is your favorite version of A Christmas Carol?

  4. I have fond childhood memories of The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) but I also remember enjoying Scrooged (1988). Having not read the novel yet though I can't say how like the original they are.

    1. I think Scrooged doesn't follow the story (if I remember it properly, but I haven't seen it for years, so maybe I'm remembering wrong). I'll have to watch The Muppet Christmas Carol!

  5. This is one story that has done very well on film. There are so many great versions. I have to say that I really love several of the older black and white versions the best. They seem to have a certain atmosphere to them.
I think that it is the 1938 version that I like best.

    1. Yeah, it probably depends on whether the director was going for cute and fun (Disney) or a more serious (but still humorous) Dickensonian atmosphere. I'll watch the older ones when I find time. :)

  7. I actually like the version with Donald Duck as Scrooge. :P Good memories watching it as a kid. Here's another review for Team 1001: The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole http://readersrefuge.blogspot.com/2013/01/book-review-castle-of-otranto-by-horace.html

    1. Yay! It's up. I haven't seen the Donald Duck one in a very long time. But I somehow remember Scrooge McDuck as Scrooge and Donald as his nephew. But I could be wrong, since I haven't seen it in so long!

    2. Thanks! And now that you say that, I do seem to remember that Scrooge is Donald's uncle, so I'm guessing you're right.
